Travel agency sign
Outdoor advertising, fragment
The metal sign (97,8 x 156,5 x 13,8 cm) in the form of the logo of the GDR travel agency was used as outdoor advertising for a branch in Eisenhüttenstadt. The logo was designed in 1966 by the award-winning artist Herbert Prüget. The travel agency organised journeys, short holidays and day-trips in the GDR, as well as in other Socialist countries. Information on travel opportunities and concrete holiday bookings was provided by branches of the travel agency or by telephone. Above all, board and lodgings were booked in hotels as an alternative to a holiday in a resort. Initially part of the national railways (Deutsche Reichsbahn), the travel agency became an independent company in 1958, before being transformed into VEB Reisebüro der DDR in 1964. Its first foreign offices were opened in 1965 in Warsaw, Prague and Moscow.
