Holiday service mascot
wooden puppet with bright yellow clothing, striking shoes and a hat
The 18 cm high wooden puppet with bright yellow clothing, striking shoes and a hat was used as the FDGB holiday service mascot from 1959 onwards. It has an eye-catching, painted face, while its head covering, with the red-printed lettering “FDGB Feriendienst”, evokes playfulness and enjoyment. A special feature is also the moveable limbs using coated wire, allowing the figure to assume different positions and even sit down. The figure was used with a variety of accessories, such as a hiking rucksack, fishing rod or skis, to advertise the different holidays and activities of the GDR’s holiday service. People interested in the state-organised, subsidised holiday trips could apply in writing to their employer’s trade union leadership.
